WA-owned independent crowned cheapest fuel retailer for 2024

Motorists could save more than $1,300 a year by shopping around for their fuel, according to new FuelWatch data that showed independent retailers were the cheapest places overall to fill up in 2024.

Selling the cheapest non-membership based unleaded petrol (ULP) in 2024 was Vibe Bullsbrook Northlink, with an average price of 164.3 cents per litre (cpl), followed closely by the Atlas Fuel Kwinana outlet with 164.9 cpl and Atlas Fuel Ascot in third spot with 165.2 cpl. This is the second year in a row Vibe has been named in the top spot, with the Kwinana Beach location offering the cheapest non-membership based ULP last year.

Vibe Bullsbrook Northlink was also the cheapest metro diesel retailer for 2024, selling for an average of 168 cpl.

Costco outlets at Casuarina and Perth Airport topped the cheapest list overall for ULP and diesel, but an annual membership is required to access these sites.

Buying ULP from the cheapest site rather than the most expensive meant motorists could have potentially saved $1,304 during the year on a 60-litre tank of petrol.

Commissioner for Consumer Protection Trish Blake said it makes sense to spend 30-seconds to shop around on the FuelWatch website for the cheapest outlet.

“Slashing over $1,300 off your yearly fuel bill is a significant saving and highlights the value of our free FuelWatch service,” she said.

“Don’t remain loyal to a brand or site as it could mean you’re paying too much.

“In 2024, the average difference between each day’s cheapest and most expensive petrol was 41.8 cents per litre.”

FuelWatch data reveals independent retailers occupied all spots in the top ten list of cheapest non-membership outlets across the Perth metropolitan area last year, while major branded retailer BP dominated the list of most expensive sites.

Perth remains in a weekly petrol price cycle with Tuesday being the cheapest day to fill up and Wednesday the most expensive.

“However, there are always bargains to be found by shopping around,” said Ms Blake.

“FuelWatch is the only service in Australia that gives consumers the opportunity to access tomorrow’s fuel prices today.”

The overall average ULP price in Perth last year was 181.9 cpl, down on 2023’s record average of 183.9. This is due to a lower international benchmark price of petrol, weaker oil demand from China and ample global crude oil supplies.

Visits to the FuelWatch website averaged 1.2 million per month in 2024.

“I urge consumers to sign up for alerts on the website to ensure they’re making the most of potential savings at the bowser,” said Ms Blake.

“Those going on a road trip can also use the interactive map on the smart-phone friendly FuelWatch website to determine the cheapest places to fill up along the way.”

Fuel price information is available at fuelwatch.wa.gov.au and, after 2.30pm each day, motorists can compare both today’s and tomorrow’s prices.
