Retirement village is communal, and it may come with some restrictions.
The Retirement Villages Act provides protections for residents and sets out rules about how villages are managed by operators.
Most villages have their own day-to-day rules, often referred to as residents rules.
You also have rights under the Retirement Villages Act including your right to privacy, accommodation and services. You are also entitled to information and consultation, access to dispute resolution and exit entitlements when you leave the village.
Village management has a set of responsibilities to ensure the village runs smoothly. This includes consultation with residents when making or changing the rules, as well as organising key meetings such as the annual general meeting and a budget meeting.
Each village has a residents’ committee to work with the operator to oversee the general operation of the village.
The committee helps address residents’ concerns, consults on fees and charges, as well as making and changing village rules. However, the committee is not a decision-making body.
Village management is also required to provide a formal dispute resolution process for residents, as these may happen occasionally when living in a close community. If your issue is not resolved, you can lodge a formal complaint with Consumer Protection.
