Halloween Safety Tips

Halloween should be fun, not frightful

Halloween is all about spooky costumes, glowing pumpkins, and lollies. Make this year's celebration memorable for all the right reasons by following our Halloween safety tips!

Button batteries – the hidden Halloween hazard

Halloween toys and decorations may look harmless, but beware - small button batteries often lurk inside Halloween products like jack-o-lanterns, flashing wands, cauldrons, torches, and fake candles.

Although tiny, these batteries can be extremely dangerous, especially for children under five. If swallowed or inserted into the body, button batteries can cause severe internal injuries, burns, and can even be fatal. They're also a choking risk for little ones.

Only buy products where the compartment holding the battery is secured by a screw, so it does not release the battery.

If you think a child has swallowed or inserted a button battery, call Triple Zero (000) immediately. Then call 13 11 26 for 24/7 fast and expert advice from the Poisons Information Centre.

Don’t let scary makeup give you a real fright – always check the ingredient!

Love dressing up with spooky face paint, fake blood, or novelty tattoos? Always read the ingredient labels on face paints, makeup kits, and costume cosmetics.

Some ingredients may cause skin irritation, rashes or allergic reactions - especially in children or people with sensitive skin.

If an allergic reaction occurs, having the ingredient list can help doctors provide quick treatment.

Play it safe by choosing products from reputable brands, do a patch test beforehand, and avoid anything without clear labelling.

Dress to impress, not to distress - choose flame resistant costumes!

Costumes and open flames don't mix. Be mindful of costume choices and nearby heat sources like candles, heaters, and jack-o-lanterns.

Look for labels that say "flame resistant" or "fire resistant" when shopping for costumes and wigs. As this helps reduce the risk of catching fire.

Never leave children unattended near anything that burns. A little extra caution goes a long way toward a safer Halloween.

Glow big or go home - be seen this Halloween!

Make sure kids (and adults!) can be easily seen when trick-or-treating after dusk.

Visibility checklist

To stay safe and visible during Halloween celebrations at night, follow these tips:

  1. Glow Sticks: Attach onto costumes or bags for increased visibility.
  2. Reflective Tape: Stick onto clothing or costumes to reflect light and enhance safety.
  3. Torch: Carry a flashlight to light your path and helps you to be seen in the dark.
  4. Light-Up Accessories: Use LED accessories to help increase your visibility.
  5. Bright Colours: Break up dark costumes with bold, bright colours.

These simple steps help ensure everyone is visible to drivers and fellow trick-or-treaters—and prevent bumps in the night!
