Compulsory Professional Development (CPD) is a legal requirement for all licensed real estate agents and business brokers, as well as all registered real estate sales representatives and property managers. Failure to complete your CPD requirements could result in your triennial certificate or registration not being renewed.
There is an important change to the 2017 CPD program with licensees and sales representatives able to select the most appropriate mandatory course relevant to their business activity.
Consumer Protection’s website provides detailed information about the CPD program for both mandatory and elective CPD activities. The program provided by our contracted trainers is of a very high quality with over 90% of attendees to date in 2016 finding the content of sessions to be relevant and the presenters to be both professional and knowledgeable.
Mandatory subjects for 2017
Strata Titles and Sale of Land Act Reforms
Licensed real estate agents and business brokers and registered real estate sales representatives will receive mandatory CPD training on proposed reform to the Strata Titles Act 1985. The reforms aim to provide more flexible and sustainable housing options to benefit developers, strata owners, investors, residents and tenants. Landgate aims to introduce the strata reform Bill to Parliament next year.
Agents and sales representatives will also receive mandatory training on managing risk in relation to changing legislation; specifically amendments to the Sale of Land Act 1970, and new legislation to capture capital gains tax payable by foreign owners when they sell property in Australia. A risk management framework will be used to explore the impact of new legislation on managing risk in agency practice.
Effective customer service and complaint management to resolve disputes in property management
Those working in residential property management will receive training on effective customer service and complaint management to resolve property management disputes. This will build on the mandatory training delivered in 2016 on best practice approaches to writing Property Condition Reports.
The mandatory CPD training for those involved in leasing commercial or retail tenancies will cover an overview of the rights and obligations of tenants and landlords in commercial and retail leasing as well as training on effective customer service and complaint management to resolve commercial tenancy disputes.
The four training organisations providing mandatory CPD activities are listed below and are able to be contacted for CPD bookings in January 2017. Please note that mandatory CPD sessions are available in venues across the Perth metropolitan area and in selected regional locations. Under the terms of their contracts, training providers are not able to deliver mandatory CPD outside of Western Australia.
Distance learning packages will also be available in 2017 for those in remote locations who are unable to attend face-to-face CPD activities.
